This depends on how often the piano is played, who is playing, and what the setting is. In general, home pianos should be tuned every 6 months, 2-3 weeks after you turn on/off your heating/cooling system. It is recommended that places of worship, schools, and theaters tune their pianos every three months due to heavy use. A tuning is also recommended if there is an upcoming concert or event.

Both a new piano and newly moved piano need at least a month to adjust to your home’s temperature and humidity.
A new piano should be tuned at least three times during the first year. There will instability during the first year due to the elasticity of the piano wire, but this will get better over time.

If your piano has not been tuned in several years it more than likely will require a pitch raise. This is a service for pianos that are so far out of tune that they must be tuned twice; the first tuning is a quick tuning which helps to re-stretch the strings and the second tuning is a more refined tuning to make sure the piano is stabilized.

When setting up an appointment, please let me know of any issues, noises, or things that you are concerned about. Many of these issues are minor adjustments that can be made while tuning.

Besides tuning your piano on a regular schedule, the best way to improve tuning stability is to reduce the changes in humidity that occur in most homes. Placing the piano away from window, outside doors, heating vents, fireplaces and other sources of extreme or sudden humidity or temperature changes will help control these humidity related issues. I am happy to advise on locations and environmental changes.
